Population immunity seems to work in US against COVID-19

Recently, MIT Technology Review published an interesting article entitled "Population immunity is slowing down the pandemic in parts of the US", showing the point that the rapid spread of the virus in US has actually helped to control the pandemic.

"Millions of US residents have been infected by the virus that causes COVID-19, and at least 160,000 are dead,'' Antonio Regalado, a senior editor for biomedicine for MIT Technology Review, wrote in his article published on August 11. "One effect is that the pool of susceptible individuals has been depleted in many areas. After infection, it’s believed, people become immune (at least for months), so they don’t transmit the virus to others. This slows the pandemic down."  Does that means we should do nothing about the virus and let people die for the sake of future "herd immunity"?
