Most COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms are often separated from their families and the image of doctors and nurses in complete protective gear could elicit fear in some of them even after the treatment. Researchers now find that one third of COVID-19 survivors are facing post-traumatic stress disorder, a mental disorder often developed after a traumatic event, such as child abuse, sexual assault, warfare, etc.
Investigators from Agostino Gemelli University assessed the mental health of 381 severely ill COVID-19 patients an average of 100 days after symptoms first appeared. About 30 percent, or 115 people, were diagnosed with PTSD, the team reports February 18 in JAMA Psychiatry.
