Alpha Toxin: Alpha toxin is a virulence factor produced by some bacteria, such as Clostridium perfringens. It damages cell membranes and is involved in gas gangrene.
Alpha toxin, also known as α-toxin, is a potent cytolytic toxin produced by certain strains of bacteria, most notably Staphylococcus aureus. It is a key virulence factor and plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of staphylococcal infections.
Alpha toxin is a pore-forming toxin that targets host cell membranes. It is secreted by Staphylococcus aureus as a water-soluble monomer, and upon binding to the target cell membrane, it undergoes oligomerization to form a heptameric pore. This pore formation leads to disruption of the cell membrane's integrity, causing leakage of cellular contents and ultimately cell death.
